FIFA’s decision to give Inter Miami a spot in the Club World Cup has caused a controversy in Major League Soccer. Miami was selected as one of the 32 teams that will participate in the event, which will take place in the United States from June 15 to July 13, Gianni Infantino stated on Sunday. Despite FIFA’s prior failure to disclose the selection criteria, David Beckham’s team is taking the host nation place.

Miami has formally entered the competition to win the Supporters’ Shield, a trophy given to the Major League Soccer team with the greatest regular season record. With 74 points at the end of the regular season, the team—which includes former Barcelona players Lionel Messi, Luis Suarez, Jordi Alba, and Sergio Busquets—set a new MLS record.

The MLS play-offs will now decide the league’s true winners, but they have already secured a high-paying contract for the upcoming summer. In addition to qualifying, Miami will host the first game of the Club World Cup.

“The world loves Miami, Miami loves football, and the world loves football.” After Inter Miami crushed the New England Revolution on Sunday, Infantino declared, “I have three things to tell you,” on the pitch at Chase Stadium in Fort Lauderdale. First of all, congrats on your Supporters’ Shield victory. Additionally, there is the Major League Soccer point record. Congrats! You are America’s top squad of the season. Second, you deserve and will be selected for the FIFA Club World Cup 2025 based on your exceptional performance this year.

Third, you will have the privilege of hosting the FIFA Club World Cup 2025 opening game at Hard Rock Stadium in Miami in front of 65,000 spectators and tens of millions at home as the host team.
