5 Questions: What Detroit Lions Gain from Za’Darius Smith Trade
We talked to Jared Mueller of the Browns blog Dawgs By Nature for his insights on the Lions’ recent trade for Za’Darius Smith.
The Detroit Lions addressed a need at defensive end by acquiring Za’Darius Smith from the Cleveland Browns. Rumors had pointed to Smith as Detroit’s top realistic target in recent days.
Now that the trade is confirmed, here’s a closer look. We asked five questions to Jared Mueller from Dawgs By Nature on how Smith has been performing with the Browns over the past season and a half.
Here’s what Mueller shared:
1. How much does Za’Darius Smith have left? Can he still win one-on-one matchups?
Mueller: “Smith sometimes shows his age on the field but compensates with his experience. A question remains: has Smith’s production been a result of playing alongside Myles Garrett and Danielle Hunter? In Cleveland, most blockers focused on Garrett, giving Smith more favorable matchups. He’s also benefited from Cleveland’s strong defensive line, allowing him to pick his matchups. When matched with the second-best lineman, Smith can bring pressure.”
2. Run defense is crucial for the Lions. How has Smith held up?
Mueller: “Smith, a strong player, handled the strongside end role well in Cleveland. He can set the edge and handle double teams. At 6-foot-4 and 270 pounds, he has the size to be a valuable piece in Detroit’s run defense.”
3. Does Smith owe his production to Garrett’s presence, or is it his own talent?
Mueller: “As I mentioned, this is tricky to gauge. What we do know is that while Jadeveon Clowney wasn’t highly productive across from Garrett, Smith has made an impact. Lions fans shouldn’t expect a Hutchinson-level player; Smith is a solid edge rusher who applies pressure, though not always resulting in sacks.”
4. What is Smith’s character like? Hard worker? Good locker room presence? Would he fit Campbell’s style?
Mueller: “Before joining Cleveland, there were concerns about Smith’s locker-room presence. But with the Browns, he was widely liked for his energy and work ethic. He’s not quiet and is well-liked. Campbell would likely welcome his vocal energy in the locker room.”
5. What do you think of the trade terms?
Mueller: “Given Smith’s age and contract, the return was as expected. Fans often overvalue their players, but Smith wasn’t returning next year, and Cleveland’s season isn’t promising. Setting aside the 2026 pick swap, a fifth-round pick for his remaining games in Cleveland seems fair.”
