Since taking over as quarterback for the Pittsburgh Steelers, Russell Wilson has been in outstanding form, helping the team defeat the New York Giants and Jets.
Following Russell Wilson’s stellar tenure as the starting quarterback for the Pittsburgh Steelers, former Super Bowl winner Chris Long has since changed his mind. Wilson has led the Steelers to wins against the New York Jets and New York Giants since replacing Justin Fields. He has thrown 36 of 57 passes for 542 yards and three touchdowns. The Steelers’ assault has gained a new dimension as the 35-year-old has found his rhythm, especially with play-action deep throws to star receiver George Pickens.
Fields led the team to a respectable 4-2 NFL record, but the quarterback’s performance was unimpressive; he only managed 1,106 yards, five touchdowns, and an interception through the air, in addition to 231 yards and five more touchdowns on the ground. However, Wilson has proven to be the experience that Steelers coach Mike Tomlin chose.
Since his Denver Broncos days, Wilson’s journey has been somewhat turbulent, and he has received a lot of criticism after joining the Seattle Seahawks. During the offseason, Long didn’t hold back while voicing his complaints. “Russell Wilson is seeing how the other half lives,” Long stated. “He feels pressure because he has never had a man support him so strongly, in addition to the unfairness of the NFL. That stadium and that city will turn against him the moment he performs poorly.
However, after nine weeks, Wilson’s outstanding performances and the Steelers’ dominance in the AFC North have caused analyst Long to publicly own his error in judgement. “I know I’ve said this before, but I wanted to make sure I said it: Russell Wilson is the only topic of my public apology tour,” he continued.
Over the past year, I’ve gotten a lot of things right. I made a mistake on this one. [Wilson] might be ideal for what they’re attempting to accomplish, and Justin Fields didn’t do nearly enough. This coordinator might be the ideal fit for him. He might be ideal for exploiting the play-action, the shots, and the shot opportunities that we were unaware of.”
Wilson and the Steelers received additional preparation time after a Week 9 bye as the seasoned quarterback strives to maintain his peak performance. Wilson had to miss some early action in the 2024 NFL season due to a calf injury that occurred shortly before training camp and was re-tweeted before their season opener against the Atlanta Falcons. In the future, Wilson and the Steelers are prepared for Sunday, November 10, when they play the 7-2 Washington Commanders at Northwest Stadium.
