Michael Maguire has had plenty on his plate since stepping into the hot seat at Brisbane.

After a woeful 2024 campaign, off-field issues have plagued the club with Ezra Mam’s car crash causing the most consternation at Red Hill.

Meanwhile, the new coach has also faced a headache around whether to go in a new direction in the leadership department out on the field.

Michael Maguire backs Adam Reynolds to captain the Broncos in 2025

Adam Reynolds was installed as captain upon his arrival from South Sydney, but has faced questions around his leadership abilities after the Broncos slumped to 12th place on the ladder.

It was a year of change at the top for NRL clubs last season with several coaches electing to appoint new captains and many wondered whether one of Maguire’s first acts would be to dump the halfback as skipper.

“I’ll talk to Reyno about that,” Maguire stated after being posed the question last month.

“He’s a leader. So, I’ll get to the players and find out where they’re at and we’ll make decisions going forward, but he’ll be a part of those decisions.”

Payne Haas was subsequently tipped as a possible replacement for Maguire after the duo shared a strong bond while in New South Wales camp together.

“Payne was incredible,” Maguire said after winning the State of Origin with the prop during his only term as Blues coach.

“He was a leader and in a leadership group within the Origin space. He spoke very strongly about what he wanted in that space which helped me immensely…He’s very hungry to succeed, that’s what I like about him.”

However, Maguire has now declared that he will not appoint Haas as the club’s new skipper and instead keep Reynolds in his post for 2025.

“Reyno is going to be the leader of the group,” Maguire told Triple M The Rush Hour with Leisel Jones, Liam & Dobbo. “He’s our leader.”
