Detroit Lions Lose Sam LaPorta for Sunday’s Clash While Jaguars Face Key Injuries
The Detroit Lions will be without star tight end Sam LaPorta this Sunday as they face the Jacksonville Jaguars. LaPorta, dealing with an AC joint sprain in his left shoulder, sustained the injury during last week’s nail-biting overtime win against the Texans. After missing practice all week, the Lions officially ruled him out on Friday.
LaPorta has been a critical piece of Detroit’s offense this season, with 25 catches for 366 yards and three touchdowns. Coming off a stellar rookie campaign where he earned Pro Bowl honors, his absence will undoubtedly leave a void for the 8-1 NFC leaders.
On a brighter note for Detroit, cornerback Carlton Davis III plans to play despite breaking his left thumb during Thursday’s practice. With a cast on his hand, Davis said he’s ready to adapt his playstyle, joking, “When I get in the game, the adrenaline takes over, and I just don’t give a (bleep) no more.”
However, the Lions won’t be at full strength defensively either, with defensive tackle Brodric Martin (knee), defensive backs Ifeatu Melifonwu (ankle/finger), and Emmanuel Moseley (pectoral) also ruled out. Linebacker Ben Niemann remains questionable due to an ankle injury.
The Jaguars are dealing with their own struggles, as quarterback Trevor Lawrence (non-throwing shoulder) will miss his second straight game. Jacksonville’s offense will also be without leading rusher Tank Bigsby, who injured his ankle in last week’s loss to the Vikings. Offensive lineman Ezra Cleveland (ankle), defensive tackle Maason Smith (ankle), and running back Keilan Robinson (toe) are listed as questionable for Sunday’s matchup.
With both teams battling injuries, this game could come down to depth and resilience, but losing LaPorta and Lawrence will likely shape the dynamics on both sides of the ball.
