Week 12 will mark Ifeatu Melifonwu’s season debut. On Monday, the organisation announced that the fourth-year safety had been activated from injured reserve. Melifonwu’s three-week activation window opened earlier this month when he resumed practicing. Although he was not added to the active roster in time for Detroit’s games in Weeks 10 or 11, he will now be able to make his debut in 2024. The Lions’ secondary has been lacking since he was placed on injured leave in September due to an ankle ailment.
Melifonwu played as a safety starter in the final stretch and during the playoffs last season. However, the Lions still have Kerby Joseph at that position, and they have an efficient first-team pair thanks to the move of Brian Branch from slot corner. When he returns, 25-year-old Melifonwu will try to establish himself as a special teams player and depth presence. His performance in the upcoming weeks will be crucial in assessing the former third-round pick’s market value as a pending free agency.
Linebacker Alex Anzalone was placed on injured reserve in a corresponding roster change. After suffering a broken forearm during yesterday’s competition, he will need to recuperate for several weeks. The measure taken today guarantees that Anzalone will miss at least four games before he can play again. One of the six IR activations Detroit currently possesses for the Melifonwu transfer will be used to bring him back into the fold.
David Long was also acquired by the Lions through a practice squad deal. Shortly after losing his defensive starting position, the Dolphins waived the veteran linebacker last week. Anthony Walker was promoted to first team duties by Miami, quickly removing Long from the squad. The 28-year-old was not claimed by any team, but he has already found a job as a free agent.
Given Anzalone’s injury, it is obviously not surprising that Long has signed with Detroit. His absence will put the Lions’ depth at the second level to the test because the latter has continued to start defence full-time this season. With 75 appearances and 49 starts under his belt, Long may soon be added to the active squad as at least a backup at linebacker.
