Cubs’ Major Trade Proposal Acquires $259 Million Superstar and All-Star Pitcher
The Chicago Cubs missed out on the postseason in 2024, and with 2025 in sight, they may look to make a bold move this winter by adding a superstar to their roster. In an appearance on MLB Network’s Hot Stove, Anthony Castrovince suggested a trade that would send Vladimir Guerrero Jr. to the Cubs:
Cubs receive: first baseman Vladimir Guerrero Jr. and right-handed pitcher Kevin Gausman
Blue Jays receive: first baseman Michael Busch, outfielder/first baseman Cody Bellinger, and right-handed pitcher Cade Horton
“Things haven’t clicked for the Blue Jays with this current roster. It’s time to make a change,” Castrovince remarked. “Let’s send Guerrero and Gausman to the Cubs, bringing back a long-term piece like Michael Busch, and take on some of Cody Bellinger’s contract.”
Guerrero is entering the final year of his contract and will hit free agency after the 2024 season. While Busch had a solid 2024 season, the Cubs have been searching for a reliable first baseman ever since parting ways with Anthony Rizzo. Spotrac forecasts Guerrero will sign a 10-year, $259 million deal when he becomes a free agent. The Cubs would also receive Kevin Gausman, a two-time All-Star who would strengthen their starting rotation.
In exchange, the Blue Jays would land a former National League MVP in Cody Bellinger and the Cubs’ No. 3 prospect, Cade Horton, according to MLB Pipeline. The Cubs have been trying to move Bellinger due to his contract, which could limit their ability to make other major free-agent signings.
Guerrero is a four-time All-Star, two-time Silver Slugger, and Gold Glove winner. He posted a .940 OPS and hit 30 home runs last season. Gausman finished third in American League Cy Young voting in 2023, registering a 3.83 ERA over 31 starts in 2024. Both players would provide a significant boost as the Cubs aim to compete for the National League Central title.
