Johnson Contributing in BYU’s Secondary
Redshirt sophomore Evan Johnson has played in 10 of Brigham Young University’s first 11 games this season, taking on a key role in the defensive secondary.
A county record holder in the 100-meter dash, Johnson has recorded 13 tackles, an interception, one quarterback hurry, and two pass breakups for the bowl-bound 9-2 Cougars.
A standout in four sports during his senior year at Stevenson, Johnson earned The Herald’s Male Athlete of the Year honor in 2022. He notched a season-high three tackles in a victory over SMU.
Standing 6 feet tall and weighing 180 pounds, Johnson has also served as a punt returner for BYU, which is ranked 19th nationally and tied for first place in the Big 12 with Arizona State, Iowa State, and Colorado.
Johnson earned all-county honors in basketball and football at Stevenson and won CCS titles in the 100- and 200-meter sprints, finishing fourth statewide in the 100. He also helped Stevenson’s baseball team capture its first league title in 41 years.
Johnson’s older brother, Wesley, is a defensive graduate assistant for BYU, while his father, Ron, was a wide receiver for the Philadelphia Eagles in the 1980s.
