Four Potential Replacements for Aaron Glenn as Lions Defensive Coordinator

If Aaron Glenn departs the Detroit Lions for a head coaching role after this season, here are four potential candidates to replace him as defensive coordinator.

As the 2025 head coaching cycle approaches, both Lions coordinators, Glenn and offensive coordinator Ben Johnson

, are likely to be in demand.

However, Glenn appears more likely to leave for a head coaching job this offseason, given the success of his work with the Lions’ defense despite numerous injuries.

His performance this season has significantly boosted his candidacy for a head coaching position, and he could have multiple opportunities to pursue.

That said, like Johnson, it’s expected Glenn will be selective in his decision and won’t leave Detroit unless the right situation presents itself.

Lions head coach Dan Campbell is also aware that his current coaching staff may not remain intact for much longer.

He’s previously expressed concerns about losing Glenn to a head coaching job, and it’s clear Campbell is preparing for the possibility of Glenn’s departure after the season ends, whenever that may be.

With this in mind, Campbell may already be considering potential candidates to take over as defensive coordinator if Glenn moves on.

Campbell, known for his excellent hires when taking over the Lions, has also made adjustments as necessary.

It’s unlikely he’ll be caught off guard by Glenn’s departure, as communication between the two is expected to be clear about Glenn’s intentions.

If Glenn does leave, a replacement could be named quickly, with Campbell’s previous track record suggesting he’s already thinking ahead.

If Glenn leaves for a head coaching job, there are several options available to step into the defensive coordinator role for the Lions, but the decision remains contingent on Glenn’s future plans.
