Detroit Lions coach visibly concerned after star accidentally ‘leaks’ plays
Detroit Lions running back Jahmyr Gibbs may have inadvertently exposed some of the team’s offensive plays on social media, causing head coach Dan Campbell to react with noticeable concern.
Following the Lions’ thrilling 23-20 Thanksgiving victory over the Chicago Bears, Gibbs celebrated by posting a picture of teammate Jermar Jefferson online. While the post was meant to highlight team spirit, it also included a background detail that raised eyebrows—a whiteboard displaying the Lions’ dropback protections for running backs.
When asked about the incident, Campbell, unaware of the situation before the media inquiry, did not hide his frustration.
“Oh, I didn’t know that,” Campbell admitted, his tone uneasy. “Yeah, I need to check on that. Did not know that. I’d rather our stuff not be out there.”
After addressing the concern briefly, Campbell thanked the media and left the press conference. His curt response underscored his unease about the potential exposure of team strategies.
Although Gibbs did not intend to reveal any confidential details, questions remain about whether he will face any consequences from the Lions. The exact information displayed on the board is unclear, leaving doubts about how much tactical knowledge was actually leaked.
Detroit’s offense is known for designing plays in the huddle, using code words for audibles at the line, and employing backup signals like quarterback Jared Goff’s “Kill! Kill!” shout. Despite the mishap, Campbell is expected to handle the matter internally and counsel Gibbs on social media etiquette.
Even if rivals analyze the post, it’s unlikely they’ll extract significant insights, though any edge could be valuable.
Gibbs, paired with David Montgomery, forms one of the NFL’s most dynamic running back duos, drawing comparisons to video game icons Sonic and Knuckles. By Week 12, Gibbs has amassed 973 rushing yards and 10 touchdowns, along with 282 receiving yards and another touchdown.
The Lions, with Gibbs, are preparing for a key Thursday Night Football showdown against the Green Bay Packers on Dec. 5.
