FRISCO — Despite his team’s devastating 27-20 loss to the Bengals on “Monday Night Football,” Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones emerged from the ruins applauding head coach Mike McCarthy. Perhaps that should be interpreted as a sign that McCarthy may be retained in 2025 if the lame duck coach is given the opportunity to sign a contract extension. Jerry has repeatedly referred to McCarthy as “outstanding,” this time even complimenting him on his “extraordinary attention to detail.” This is a sarcastic and perhaps even unconventional assessment considering that Dallas lost this game due to a muffed punt during which confusion (that is, a lack of attention to detail) predominated.

However, maybe awkwardly, the owner is simultaneously complimenting the man who is ready, should he want to, to take over McCarthy’s position, while McCarthy is attempting to survive in this last year of his contract with Jerry by making noises about being kept.

Regarding Bill Belichick, Jones remarked, “I don’t know that I’ve seen a coach available… with his stature.” “He still has plenty of gas in his tank. A great deal. He’s playing the game. He is astute. He is familiar with every player in the league. There isn’t a learning curve. Jones continued by praising the legendary Super Bowl winner Belichick, who is currently considering coaching at the University of North Carolina.

“It doesn’t surprise me that everything out here that has a coach concept associated with that he’s not being considered,” Jones said, using a variety of words. Bill Belichick might be a very successful manager of a large corporation. He simply possesses that leadership quality, and in this instance, Bill Belichick is the only person who understands football better than anyone else and knows how to use it to win a game. That was intended to support Belichick’s coaching everywhere, especially in higher education. However, if “no one knows how to win a ball game better than” Belichick, and if his “stature” is unrivalled…
