The Detroit Lions boast an impressive 12-1 record heading into Week 15, showcasing their resilience despite a challenging season.
After winning their division last year, Dan Campbell’s team has navigated a tough schedule, making this season’s success even more remarkable.
What stands out most is how the Lions have overcome significant obstacles, particularly injuries.
Key players have missed time, including star Aidan Hutchinson, whose playoff availability remains uncertain.
These setbacks have tested Detroit’s depth, a crucial factor as the postseason looms, where a single upset could expose vulnerabilities.
With the defensive line currently hampered by injuries, one player could provide much-needed relief.
Bleacher Report’s Matt Holder recently suggested the Lions should consider signing veteran defensive tackle Mike Purcell.
With injuries to D.J. Reader and Alim McNeil, adding “another big-bodied option on the interior” could bolster Detroit’s depth as they prepare for the playoffs.
Though not a flashy signing, Purcell would bring valuable experience to Detroit’s defense. The 33-year-old has played in 90 games, starting 45, since entering the league in 2014.
His versatile career includes stints as both a starter and a backup, demonstrating his adaptability and willingness to contribute wherever needed.
Despite being unsigned since the New England Patriots released him this preseason, Purcell has shown he still has something to offer.
In 2022, he recorded career highs in sacks (1.5) and quarterback hits (4) while tallying 45 tackles. In 2023, he added five QB hits and three pass breakups, the latter marking a personal best.
Standing 6-foot-3 and weighing nearly 330 pounds, Purcell is a natural fit to plug gaps on Detroit’s defensive line.
His presence would provide insurance against further injuries, and even if he doesn’t play, his experience makes him a valuable depth piece for a Lions defense that’s battled adversity all season.
