DETROIT — Isaac Paredes’ stint with the Chicago Cubs was brief, as the former Detroit Tigers infielder was traded again on Tuesday, this time to the Houston Astros in a deal for outfielder Kyle Tucker.

Houston also acquired right-hander Hayden Wesneski and prospect Cam Smith in the trade.

Paredes, originally signed by the Cubs out of Mexico in 2015, was sent to Detroit on July 31, 2017, along with third baseman Jeimer Candelario, in exchange for left-handed reliever Justin Wilson and catcher Alex Avila.

The trade involving Paredes became one of former Tigers general manager Al Avila’s best moves.

However, his decision to trade Paredes in 2022—following Riley Greene’s unexpected spring training injury—was widely criticized.

Paredes had limited playing time with the Tigers in 2020 and 2021, failing to secure a regular role.

He thrived with the Rays, though, hitting 31 homers with 98 RBIs in 2023, posting an .840 OPS (131 OPS+) while playing across the infield.

In 2024, Paredes earned his first All-Star selection but struggled after being traded to the Cubs.

With Houston, Paredes’ role remains uncertain. If the Astros don’t re-sign Alex Bregman, Paredes could step in at third base. Alternatively, he could fit at first base if Bregman stays.
