Despite a stellar season, Detroit Lions safety Kerby Joseph will not be among the seven players representing the 14-2 team at the 2025 Pro Bowl Games in Orlando.
Even though the Lions are well-represented, Joseph’s absence is surprising, especially given his league-leading nine interceptions.
Joseph’s exclusion comes as Green Bay Packers free safety Xavier McKinney was chosen instead, boasting seven interceptions, 84 combined tackles, and a fumble recovery.
While Joseph’s teammate Brian Branch earned a Pro Bowl spot at strong safety, many fans view Joseph’s omission as a snub, particularly after his standout performance.
Detroit defensive coordinator Aaron Glenn offered a cryptic response when questioned about Joseph’s absence, stating, “I think we all know that, but it is what it is,” according to The Athletic’s Colton Pouncy.
Glenn’s comments sparked speculation that Joseph’s reputation might have influenced the decision.
The 24-year-old has faced criticism for controversial plays, including low hits last season that caused injuries to tight ends T.J. Hockenson and Tyler Higbee. He was also involved in an altercation with wide receiver Jauan Jennings earlier this week.
This perceived reputation as a “dirty player” could have impacted the votes from coaches and players, despite Joseph leading fan voting at his position.
Statistically, Joseph has excelled this season with 77 combined tackles, 12 passes defended, and one tackle for loss, in addition to his nine interceptions.
Pro Football Focus assigned him an impressive overall grade of 90.7, compared to McKinney’s 87.1. These metrics make Joseph’s exclusion puzzling to many, further fueling the narrative of an unjustified snub.
The Lions, who have overcome numerous injuries throughout the season, now face added motivation heading into their Week 18 matchup against the Minnesota Vikings and the playoffs. Carrying an “us-against-the-world” mentality might serve them well as they push for postseason success.
For Joseph, being left off the Pro Bowl roster could provide extra determination to prove his critics wrong. While the snub is disappointing, it could fuel both him and the team as they aim to capitalize on their outstanding 2024-25 campaign.
