BYU QB Jake Retzlaff Eager to ‘Attack’ 2025 Season
BYU Football, Jake Retzlaff, 2025 Season…
PROVO, Utah — Jake Retzlaff’s promotions to BYU’s starting quarterback position were quiet, lacking significant announcements.
In 2023, Retzlaff started against West Virginia after Kedon Slovis was injured. Last season, he earned the role over Gerry Bohanon during fall camp. Unlike past quarterback competitions under Kalani Sitake (e.g., Taysom Hill in 2016 or Jaren Hall in 2021), BYU avoided publicizing its starter.
Retzlaff, who was overlooked during recruiting due to the COVID-19 pandemic, likely preferred it that way. The Corona Centennial High School alum navigated two junior colleges before landing at BYU.
Focusing on his growth, Retzlaff helped BYU rebound with an 11-2 record in 2024, capped by a commanding 36-14 Alamo Bowl win over Colorado.
Beyond that, Retzlaff proved BYU could succeed in the Big 12, cementing itself as a top Power Four contender. He contributed 2,947 passing yards, 417 rushing yards, and 26 touchdowns (20 passing, 6 rushing) during the season.
While many players explore the transfer portal for NIL opportunities after a strong season, Retzlaff stayed committed to BYU.
Retzlaff Committed to BYU
With NIL partnerships, including a deal with Manischewitz, Retzlaff expressed dedication to BYU and a desire to achieve more in 2025.
“This is a quarterback university. I have so many reasons to be here,” Retzlaff told KSL Sports. “I’m ready to attack next season with the guys.”
A Top Five QB in 2025?
During the Alamo Bowl broadcast, BC’s Dave Pasch shared BYU coaches’ belief that Retzlaff could be a top-five quarterback in 2025.
Offensive coordinator Aaron Roderick highlighted Retzlaff’s strong season but acknowledged room for growth, especially in November when the offense underperformed.
“I expect him to be one of the best quarterbacks in college football next year,” Roderick said, emphasizing incremental progress.
Reloading for 2025
BYU retains key playmakers like running back LJ Martin and wide receiver Chase Roberts. Despite losing offensive linemen Brayden Keim and Connor Pay, the Cougars return experienced players such as Weylin Lapuaho, Bruce Mitchell, and Isaiah Jatta.
If All-Big 12 tackle Caleb Etienne uses his extra eligibility, it would further solidify the line. Additionally, Michigan transfer Andrew Gentry and Utah transfer Carsen Ryan bring depth.
With these assets, BYU could contend for a Big 12 Championship. In 2024, they missed the title game due to tiebreakers.
Areas for Improvement
One area for Retzlaff to address is interceptions. He threw 12 picks in 2024, improving from a 1-1 TD-INT ratio in 2023 to 5-3 in 2024. Reducing turnovers will be critical in 2025.
Retzlaff and BYU thrived on low expectations last year, securing 11 wins. Maintaining their edge will be vital as they face heightened scrutiny next season.
Building Momentum for 2025
Retzlaff credits his strong relationship with offensive coordinator Aaron Roderick as key to his growth.
“Coach ‘A-Rod’ and I have an incredible relationship,” Retzlaff said. “I’m excited to attack next year in the blue and white.”
