At one time, the top team in the WNBA was located right here in Detroit. The Detroit Shock secured three WNBA titles in the early 2000s under the leadership of coach Bill Laimbeer, who had ties to the Bad Boy Pistons period.

In 2009, the team relocated to Tulsa, Oklahoma, a shift viewed as a failure by the WNBA rather than by the city of Detroit. In recent times, the WNBA’s appeal has increased notably, and there has been a demand for the WNBA to return to Detroit.

There’s a great possibility that it might occur, and Detroit Lions owner Shiela Ford Hamp could significantly influence it. She and her spouse Steve Hamp became part of a distinguished group of investors aiming to revitalize women’s professional basketball in Detroit.

Lions quarterback Jared Goff and his spouse Christen Goff are also stakeholders in this initiative.
