Pep Guardiola’s ‘biggest weakness’ as wait continues for two players

Pep Guardiola received strong support in the January transfer window, spending £180 million in hopes of reviving the season. However, some Manchester City supporters in the Manchester Evening News comment section are becoming skeptical that young talents like James McAtee and Nico O’Reilly will ever get a real opportunity at the club.

City rejected several inquiries for both players last month, including bids from Bayer Leverkusen for McAtee and Chelsea for O’Reilly. With several new signings now part of the team as City tries to recover from its struggles, it seems unlikely that either player will have a significant role to play moving forward.

The two have been used recently to provide rest for more senior players, and McAtee has had a successful two-season stint at Sheffield United, earning support from many fans. For the time being, the duo must continue to convince Guardiola that they deserve a chance on the training ground.

Last month, Guardiola spoke about McAtee, saying: “We don’t have enough players, we have a World Cup at the end of the season, and a lot of games. I think he can play more minutes, but he needs to fight for that, and I am happy with Macca. I understand the frustration, absolutely. I was a footballer and have great empathy for how he feels. But the same applies to others, and they too need to be ready.”
