While “Sonic and Knuckles” might be one of the most iconic nicknames for a running back pairing in NFL history, Detroit Lions running back David Montgomery feels he and Jahmyr Gibbs are more than just a catchy title.
In an interview with NFL Network analyst and former NFL fullback Mike Robinson this week, Montgomery spoke about his partnership with Gibbs in the backfield. Robinson showered the duo with praise, calling them the “best running back pairing in the NFL.” The five-year veteran went even further, emphasizing the unique bond he and Gibbs share.
“We’re definitely the best running back duo in the league,” Montgomery said. “But me and Jahmyr—that’s my guy. You have to be in the right mindset to be selfish enough to appreciate someone else’s success. A lot of people forget that we’re all competitors, all wanting to play, all wanting to be the top guy, but sometimes you have to be selfish for the greater good of the team.
“So being able to team up with someone like Jahmyr, and do it together, is really special. When we’re both done playing together, we’ll be remembered as the best running back duo to ever play together.”
Montgomery’s statement is bold, but when healthy, he and Gibbs have proven they are a dominant force. Over the last two seasons, they’ve combined for 4,147 rushing yards and 51 touchdowns.
A major factor in their success was former offensive coordinator Ben Johnson, who has since moved on to become the head coach of the Lions’ division rival, the Chicago Bears.
After Johnson’s departure, the Lions brought in Denver Broncos passing game coordinator John Morton as the new offensive coordinator. Morton, a native of Auburn Hills and a Western Michigan graduate, returns to Detroit after serving as a senior offensive assistant with Dan Campbell’s staff in 2022.
Since Morton arrived before Montgomery joined the Lions, the running back doesn’t have firsthand experience with him. However, he is aware of Morton’s reputation and looks forward to working with him.
“I’ve heard a lot of good things about him,” Montgomery said. “Coach Campbell and Brad do a great job of bringing in people who fit our culture and can help us succeed.
“And I know he doesn’t make those mistakes; he’s very thoughtful about who he brings into the building. So I’m excited about it.”
