Cole Kmet’s Spot on the Bears Roster May Not Be Guaranteed

Cole Kmet’s Position on the Bears Roster May Not Be Secure

As the off-season approaches, a few players can be considered virtually untouchable on the Chicago Bears roster. Caleb Williams, Darnell Wright, Rome Odunze, and D.J. Moore are immediate offensive standouts. Most would assume tight end Cole Kmet is also a guaranteed safe choice. However, that assumption might be premature. Given the new coaching staff under Ben Johnson, the tight end position will play a significant role in the passing game.

Some might argue that Kmet’s presence in the passing game isn’t in jeopardy, as he has demonstrated his ability to contribute effectively. This is true—when given the chance, Kmet can be a threat. But T.J. Hockenson was in a similar situation. The former Pro Bowler had been a consistent part of the passing game for Detroit until 2022, when Johnson took over offensive playcalling. In the middle of the season, Hockenson was traded to Minnesota for draft picks. While Kmet’s situation isn’t quite the same yet, Brad Biggs of the Chicago Tribune suggests the Bears may be searching for additional tight end options.

Is it Depth or Competition? The Bears are in need of a tight end, and all signs point to them addressing the position in the draft…

…When Poles and Johnson discussed aligning team needs with the available talent this offseason, tight end was certainly on their minds. Free-agent options are limited, but the draft holds plenty of promise, with Penn State’s Tyler Warren and Michigan’s Colston Loveland likely to be first-round picks.

Should the Bears explore free-agent options, Juwan Johnson is considered the top available tight end, according to various league sources. The 28-year-old has spent the last five years with the New Orleans Saints, which makes him familiar to offensive coordinator Declan Doyle.

Cole Kmet’s Position Is Far from Secure Although Kmet is a solid player, he isn’t guaranteed a spot. Hockenson, a more accomplished passing weapon, was still traded. Many experts agree that the 2025 draft class is deep in tight ends, and Johnson has confidence in his ability to find talented players. He helped the Lions draft Sam LaPorta, who has since become a Pro Bowler. Kmet is far from untradeable; at 26 years old, he has three years left on his current deal. A trade could free up $6.8 million in cap space, and it’s unlikely the Bears would lack suitors. While they are likely focused on adding depth, the situation could change quickly if a compelling offer for Kmet arises. Detroit secured second and third-round picks for Hockenson, and a similar deal could make things very interesting.
