The veteran analyst is also honored in the Pro Football Hall of Fame and guided the Dallas Cowboys to two consecutive Super Bowl victories.
Jimmy Johnson, a veteran commentator for Fox Sports, is stepping down.
During his appearance on The Herd with Colin Cowherd on Monday, March 3, the ex-football coach discussed his “challenging choice” to step down from the network. The analyst and ex-coach, 81, initially joined Fox in 1994, coinciding with the launch of Fox NFL Sunday.
“I’ve been contemplating this for the past four or five years, and I’ve chosen to retire from Fox,” Johnson stated. “Arguably the most enjoyable time I’ve experienced in my career — including Super Bowls and national championships — was at Fox Sports.”
I will miss it. “I’m really going to miss everyone,” he went on. “I’ll see them from time to time.”
Johnson’s “remarkable journey beginning 31 years prior” came after his triumph as a football coach for the Dallas Cowboys, whom he guided to two back-to-back Super Bowl victories. (He is among just six head coaches to accomplish that milestone in NFL history.) He served as a college football coach for the Miami Hurricanes, who won the College Football National Championship in 1987.
In 1996, Johnson temporarily departed from Fox Sports to take the head coach role with the Miami Dolphins, later coming back to the network in 2002. In 2020, Johnson was enshrined in the Pro Football Hall of Fame’s centennial class.
The departing analyst collaborated with veteran Fox Sports figures Curt Menefee, Terry Bradshaw, Howie Long, and Michael Strahan.
Eric Shanks, the CEO of Fox Sports, provided Johnson with a warm farewell in a statement posted on X. “Jimmy inspired countless generations of football fans with his iconic swagger, unique perspective, and distinctive humor.” “With his inspiring speeches and unparalleled enthusiasm throughout the years, he was our coach who consistently encouraged us to improve,” Shanks stated.
He stated, “Coach will be truly missed, and we wish him well as he embarks on retirement, just as only Jimmy Johnson can.”
Strahan, 53, also responded to the retirement announcement of his former colleague. “Best wishes on your retirement @JimmyJohnson!” It has been 17 seasons of joy and laughter beside you. You’re genuinely unique, and I appreciate you for being yourself and giving me one of the greatest friendships anyone could ever wish for. “Wishing you have a great time fishing and enjoying beers on the boat.🛥️ You’ve earned it, love you Coach!” he shared on X.
