Eagles Predicted to Lose Star Defender to NFC East Rival
It was a good season for Philadelphia Eagles EDGE Josh Sweat, who accumulated eight sacks, 41 tackles, nine tackles for loss, 12 quarterback hits, 16 pressures and a 75.6 (28th/211 EDGE) Pro Football Focus grade.
He also played a pivotal role in the Eagles’ Super Bowl LIX win over the Kansas City Chiefs, sacked quarterback Patrick Mahomes 2.5 times and had six total tackles.
Now, though, Sweat is set to hit free agency, where he’s widely regarded as one of the best pass rushers for the team to sign, and ESPN predicts he will end up with the Washington Commanders on a three-year $60 million deal with $40 million guaranteed.
A contract with those numbers would tie him for the 15th highest-paid EDGE in terms of total value with the Broncos’ Jonathon Cooper and tied for the 14th highest in annual salary ($24 million) with the Bills’ Von Miller.
Sweat could also play a key role in helping improve the Commanders’ pass rush, which in 2024 was tied for 11th in sacks (43), tied for 22nd in pressures (129), 20th in hurries (45), and tied for 24th in quarterback knockdowns.
Considering that the Commanders also have $78.5 million in cap space, the third most of any NFL team heading into 2025, a contract like this is easily doable.
