NBA Makes History: Jayson Tatum, LeBron James Announcement Before Lakers-Celtics
The rivalry between the Los Angeles Lakers and Boston Celtics has always been defined by iconic showdowns. From Magic Johnson versus Larry Bird to Kobe Bryant facing Paul Pierce, basketball’s legends have battled in this historic matchup. Saturday night’s game will be no different, as LeBron James and Luka Doncic challenge a Celtics team led by Jayson Tatum, Jaylen Brown, and Kristaps Porzingis.
Both teams are currently ranked No. 2 in their respective conferences, making this a possible preview of the NBA Finals. The Lakers come into the game on an eight-game winning streak and will aim to improve their 15-14 road record at a crucial stage of the season. On the other hand, Boston will try to avenge a heavy loss (117-96) to LA on January 23 and level the season series.
Ahead of the highly anticipated matchup, the NBA posted a special announcement on its official X account, highlighting the remarkable achievements of James and Tatum in league history.
According to the NBA, James and Tatum are the only two players in history to reach 13,000 points, 4,000 rebounds, and 2,000 assists before the age of 27.
Tatum, who turned 27 on Monday, is having another stellar season. The six-time All-Star is on pace to be the first Celtics player to average over 25 points per game for four consecutive seasons, currently averaging 26.9 points, 8.8 rebounds, and 5.8 assists, with a shooting percentage of 45.5%.
Meanwhile, James continues to defy age in his 22nd season, maintaining an MVP-caliber performance at 40 years old. The four-time MVP is averaging 25.1 points, 8.1 rebounds, and 8.5 assists while shooting an impressive 51.8% from the field. Earlier this week, James made history as the first player ever to surpass 50,000 career points in the Lakers’ victory over the New Orleans Pelicans.
