The Detroit Lions were eliminated by the Washington Commanders in the divisional round of the 2024 NFL playoffs, but the Lions struck back by signing cornerback DJ Reed during free agency.
Reed disclosed that his choice ultimately boiled down to Washington and Detroit before selecting to move to the Motor City.
I wished to receive payment. I wished to play with dogs. “I’m joining an amazing team and have a chance at that Lombardi,” Reed stated. “My objective was to claim a Super Bowl victory.”
Reed would have been an integral asset to the Commanders’ secondary, particularly with the possibility of reuniting with linebacker Bobby Wagner, his previous teammate for two years with the Seattle Seahawks.
Reed played for the New York Jets during the previous three seasons (2022–24). In 2024, he played all 14 games, achieving a total of 64 tackles (52 solo), 11 pass defenses, four tackles for loss, and one sack.
Initially selected by the San Francisco 49ers in the fifth round (142nd overall) of the 2018 NFL Draft from Kansas State, Reed played for two seasons (2018–19) with the 49ers before joining the Seahawks for two seasons (2020–21).
In 101 career games (70 as a starter), Reed has recorded 405 tackles (320 solo), 51 deflected passes, six interceptions, four forced fumbles, four recoveries, and two sacks.
Although the Commanders were unable to secure Reed, they still possess opportunities in free agency and the forthcoming NFL Draft to enhance their secondary. With the 29th pick, Washington might focus on acquiring a young cornerback to complement its experienced players.
