The Kansas City Chiefs aim to improve in all areas before preparing for the 2025 NFL season. They have made certain acquisitions in free agency, but they also let go of important players from last season’s roster.

The Chiefs will seek players in the 2025 NFL Draft to complete their roster and address the gaps left unfilled in free agency.

The Chiefs have achieved success in recent years by discovering talent in every round of their selections. The Chiefs have gained advantages from other teams due to the poor drafting of other NFL franchises. The Chiefs have capitalized on that completely, and next month they aim to replicate it.

Hall of Fame senior committee member Rick Gosselin discussed the reasons behind the prevalence of poor drafting teams.

“While I was reviewing the drafts and scoring them, I began each team with a C,” Gosselin mentioned on the Las Vegas Raiders Insider Podcast. “You can likely count the significant drafts in history on two hands.” Many individuals evaluate drafts, beginning with an A for everyone, and then you lose that A. I believe that having an A means you should acquire strong players; thus, that equates to a C. If you perform better, you earn a B… However, the vast majority of drafts are mediocre, and it’s the players or teams that succeed later on.

“The younger recruits lack those same relationships.” Often, they lack the understanding that the veteran scouts possessed. Drawing from 20- and 30-year associations with the scout they had at a specific school. I believe college coaches disband many teams. They discuss players, but they avoid sharing the negative aspects. Sadly, they discover the negative aspects post-draft, and I believe the trend of younger scouts has influenced the drafting process.

The Chiefs’ knack for discovering talent through their selections has enabled them to let important players depart in free agency, as they trust they can fill those gaps in the draft.
