After all, Jared Goff is not viewed as a bridge quarterback by the Detroit Lions. Numerous reports claim that the Lions and Goff have reached a long-term extension agreement.
Goff signed a four-year, $212 million contract with guaranteed money of $170 million, according to NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero. At $53 million per year, Goff’s compensation is now the second highest among quarterbacks, making him the most-paid athlete in franchise history. Only Joe Burrow of the Cincinnati Bengals earns $55 million more.
In 2021, Goff became a member of the Lions when Matthew Stafford was traded to the Los Angeles Rams. At first, it was thought Detroit would select a new franchise quarterback in the draft and use Goff as a stopgap quarterback.
But even if the Lions had those ideas, Goff’s outstanding play forced them to rethink them. In his first season with the team, he was selected to the Pro Bowl, and in 2023, he had even greater success.
Goff threw for 4,575 yards and 30 touchdowns in the previous season, finishing with a career-high 67.3% pass completion percentage. With a 12-5 record, the Lions advanced to the NFC Championship Game after winning the NFC North.
The Detroit Lions secured long-term contracts for its star players during this summer. The team inked All-Pro offensive tackle Penei Sewell and outstanding wide receiver Amon-Ra St. Brown to new contracts prior to signing Goff to an extension.
