Netflix has officially announced the release date of one of its most eagerly awaited sports documentaries of the year. Titled *“THE UNDERDOG,”* the documentary chronicles the life and legacy of legendary Supercross rider Joel Robert, and it will be available for streaming worldwide starting June 25th.

Known as a pioneer of motocross racing and often regarded as one of the most naturally gifted riders in the history of the sport, Joel Robert’s story is one of resilience, raw talent, and relentless determination. *“THE UNDERDOG”* delves deep into Robert’s rise from humble beginnings in Belgium to becoming a six-time FIM Motocross World Champion, a feat that secured his status as a global motorsports icon.

Directed by Emmy-nominated filmmaker Sarah Thompson, the documentary combines archival race footage, behind-the-scenes material, and exclusive interviews with family members, former teammates, and contemporary riders who were inspired by Robert’s fearless style and unorthodox approach to racing.

“Joel wasn’t just a racer—he was a force of nature,” said Thompson in a statement. “What fascinated me most was how someone so naturally talented also battled personal demons, industry politics, and physical adversity, yet never stopped doing what he loved. His story needed to be told in full, and Netflix gave us the platform and creative space to do it justice.”

Joel Robert burst onto the scene in the 1960s, defying the odds with his seemingly effortless command of the bike. Unlike many of his rivals, Robert relied on instinct rather than rigid technique. His style was loose, raw, and captivating—earning him not only championships but also the admiration of fans around the world. However, behind the triumphs were challenges: injuries, criticism from purists, and later in life, health issues that cast a shadow over his final years.

*“THE UNDERDOG”* does not shy away from these struggles. In fact, it embraces them, offering viewers an intimate, honest, and often emotional look into Robert’s world. Interviews with motocross legends like Roger De Coster, Stefan Everts, and Ricky Carmichael bring further depth to the story, sharing how Robert helped shape the DNA of modern Supercross.

The documentary also explores the cultural impact Robert had in Europe and abroad, including how he paved the way for European riders to break into the U.S.-dominated sport. His legacy is not just in the titles he won, but in the confidence he gave to others who, like him, didn’t fit the mold.

“Joel was ahead of his time. He didn’t train the way others did. He didn’t even look the part. But put him on a bike, and he was magic,” says De Coster in the film. “He made you believe that passion could beat perfection.”

Netflix executives believe *“THE UNDERDOG”* will resonate beyond the Supercross community. “This is not just a sports documentary,” said Marta Velasco, Netflix’s head of international documentaries. “It’s a universal story about perseverance, the cost of greatness, and the fight to be understood. Whether you’re a motocross fan or not, Joel Robert’s journey is inspiring and unforgettable.”

As the premiere date approaches, anticipation is building on social media, with fans and professional riders sharing memories and tributes to Robert using the hashtag #TheUnderdogNetflix. A special screening is scheduled in Brussels on June 24th, attended by members of Joel’s family, racing legends, and key figures from the motorsport world.

With a compelling narrative, stunning visuals, and a soundtrack packed with adrenaline and emotion, *“THE UNDERDOG”* promises to be more than a tribute—it’s a celebration of a man who changed a sport forever.

Streaming starts June 25th, exclusively on Netflix.
