Liverpool manager Klopp confirms another setback for Thiago
Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp has confirmed midfielder Thiago Alcantara’s recovery from hip surgery. The Spaniard underwent hip surgery at the end of last season and was initially expected to return to action ahead of the new Premier League campaign. However, he suffered a setback during his rehabilitation and Klopp has now revealed that the midfielder has suffered another relapse.
Speaking to reporters ahead of the Brighton and Hove Albion game, he said (via Liverpoolfc.com): “It’s just annoying, especially for [Thiago] himself. He’s had two setbacks in rehab, which aren’t huge, but big enough that he put down a pitch. Obviously not the same injury, not at all, but somewhat similar.”
Fresh wound blow
Liverpool parted ways with two senior defensive midfielders in Jordan Henderson and Fabinho in the summer and it was expected that Thiago would be able to make his place. However, the Spaniard has not been able to overcome his ongoing hip problems and has yet to return to competition.
Klopp’s latest comments about Thiago suggest the midfielder could be out for a few more weeks. Liverpool shouldn’t be too worried as new signings Wataru Endo, Alexis Mac Allister and Ryan Gravenberch can all play in a number six role, but Thiago’s availability would strengthen his strong passing and focus. The 32-year-old is currently in the final year of his contract at Liverpool and it will be interesting to see if they consider a new deal for him amid his injuries. The club were happy to release Naby Keita last summer due to his poor injury record. Thiago has a huge season ahead of him. He needs to reinvent himself or the Reds may consider a trade. They have been eyeing Fluminense’s Andre for some time now.
