Gary Neville accepted he was wrong about Liverpool
Gary Neville admits he has been surprised by Liverpool and their start to their new Premier League campaign
Gary Neville has admitted that Liverpool have made a much stronger start to the season than he imagined, but remained firm in his prediction that Arsenal will win the Premier League title.
Liverpool are in fourth place in the Premier League after the latest round of matches after they were held to a 2-2 draw at Brighton and Hove Albion on Sunday afternoon. The Reds currently sit three points behind Tottenham Hotspur going into the October international break. Apart from Chelsea, Newcastle United and Tottenham Hotspur have suffered just one defeat so far this season, which came in controversial circumstances in north London last weekend.
And with such an impressive start to the campaign, Neville admitted that Liverpool are one of two top six sides that have surprised him this season.
“By the way, I don’t change my predictions for those who think I’m crazy, I always keep my predictions the same,” Sky Sports pundit Gary Neville said on the Podcast. “But what I’ve seen in eight to 10 weeks is Manchester United are a lot worse than I thought, Tottenham are a lot better than I thought, Liverpool are better than I thought. It’s probably the same as most people .”
Delivering his predictions for the season, Neville backed Jurgen Klopp’s lead ahead of Spurs but behind Manchester City and Arsenal and then delivered a scathing verdict on his former club, insisting they are fighting for a top-five finish. “I don’t think Manchester United will finish in the top five this season, I just don’t. I think they’re a long way from that. I’m surprised because seven or eight weeks ago I had them [ranked] third. Again,” added the Old Trafford forward superbly. “But to be honest, what I see at the moment, I don’t think the goalkeeper has adapted quickly – I think he should have saved the goalkeeper yesterday. I think that’s the problem. “If your goalkeeper is not happy and there is instability that creates a big problem. I experienced that at United – so at United, not for me.
“I think Chelsea [they are] much closer to that. If they can just apply because they have really talented young players. Their age is much better than United’s squad.”
Liverpool will host Everton at Anfield on October 21 after the international match.
