Jacksonville is locking down its franchise quarterback, and that presumably is good news for 49ers signal-caller Brock Purdy.
The Jaguars and Trevor Lawrence agreed to a five-year, $275 million agreement, NFL Media’s Ian Rapoport first reported Thursday, citing sources.
Lawrence will reportedly receive $200 million guaranteed, with $142 million arriving once he signs the contract.
Lawrence’s annual salary of $55 million would make him the highest-paid NFL player, alongside Cincinnati Bengals star Joe Burrow.
Purdy, who led the 49ers to Super Bowl LVIII last year, is entitled to sign a new contract following the 2024 NFL season.
If he has another MVP-caliber season, the final choice in the 2022 NFL Draft is projected to cash in.
And the recent contracts signed by Lawrence and Detroit Lions quarterback Jared Goff could set the standard for Purdy’s extension.
Purdy, the 49ers quarterback, will work alongside the Bears’ top draft pick, Williams, this offseason. Lawrence, the 2021 No. 1 overall choice, is coming off a solid 2023 season in which some of his numbers dropped after a spike as a sophomore.
Lawrence tossed 4,016 yards, 21 touchdowns, and 14 interceptions in 16 games, with a 65.6 completion percentage.
Despite finishing 9-8 for the second consecutive season, the Jaguars failed to qualify for the playoffs as the AFC South became more competitive.
Lawrence led the Jaguars to the playoffs in 2022, where they made an incredible comeback against the Los Angeles Chargers in the wild card round before losing to the Kansas City Chiefs in the division round.
In addition to Christian Kirk, the Jaguars added Gabe Davis from the Buffalo Bills in free agency and drafted Brian Thomas Jr. from LSU with the No. 23 overall pick.
Mac Jones, who previously played for the New England Patriots, now serves as Lawrence’s backup quarterback.
