The Detroit Lions secondary is gaining confidence in their ability to meet Aaron Glenn’s weekly expectations. Rookie cornerback Terrion Arnold has demonstrated confidence and competitiveness since joining the secondary through a trade up in the draft.
According to NFL.com, Detroit’s first-round choice is expected to strengthen the defense and make an immediate impact.Arnold is anticipated to challenge for Defensive Rookie of the Year and make analysts’ All-Rookie teams.
“The Lions’ primary draft need was cornerback, and they were willing to trade up for Arnold while he was still available at No. 24.
He can work with veteran trade acquisition Carlton Davis and second-round pick Ennis Rakestraw Jr. to strengthen the position,” noted Chad Reuter.
“I expect Arnold to attack the ball for Detroit, likely intercepting and breaking up multiple passes as quarterbacks test the rookie, with his former Alabama teammate, Brian Branch, handling nickel duties.”
Detroit’s additions of Ennis Rakestraw in the draft and Carlton Davis and Amik Robertson in free agency are likely to increase competition for defensive back positions.
“The good thing about it is you have to prove it,” defensive backs coach Deshea Townsend explained. “It doesn’t matter when you start, but when you get it. You need to make the most of it.
That’s why we’re here: to compete. We have a room full of players who are eager to go out there and prove themselves, and that’s what we have to do every day.”
