This Hour: Mavericks Star Bids Emotional Farewell as He’s Traded out to the Pistons

Tim Hardaway Jr. sends farewell message to Dallas Mavericks after trade to Detroit

“Even though things didn’t end the way I wanted them to, I am forever grateful,” Hardaway Jr. said on social media.

Before Tim Hardaway Jr. headed off to Detroit following his trade to the Pistons, the veteran guard posted a final farewell to the Dallas Mavericks organization and fans on Saturday.

“The last 5 seasons will be something I will cherish forever. First and foremost I want to thank all of my teammates, love you all and we will always be brothers,” Hardaway Jr. wrote on Instagram. “To Dallas, THANK YOU for helping me become not just a better ball player, but helping me mature even more as a person!

“The city and organization embraced my family and I with open arms and even though things didn’t end the way I wanted them too, I am forever grateful. Will always be love. Thank you, God Bless.”

The Mavericks on Saturday announced the full terms of the deal, which will net them guard Quentin Grimes, on Saturday.

Along with Hardaway, Dallas sent three second-round picks to Detroit. Dallas included its 2025 pick via Toronto, a 2028 pick from Miami and another 2028 pick that will be the less favorable of those between Charlotte or the Los Angeles Clippers.

Hardaway arrived in Dallas from New York during the 2018-19 season as a part of the Kristaps Porzingis trade. He spent almost six seasons in Dallas, averaging 15.2 points while shooting 37% from three.

He spent most of last season serving as the Mavericks’ sixth man off the bench, averaging 14.4 points in 79 games during the regular season. However, after moves to acquire P.J. Washington and Daniel Gafford before February’s trade deadline, Hardaway began to fall further down in the rotation.

Hardaway’s role decreased even further during the Mavericks’ run to the NBA Finals. In the playoffs, he averaged 4.4 points in 12.7 minutes per game.

In addition to Grimes, the Mavericks also made moves this offseason to add guard Klay Thompson and forward Naji Marshall.
