Detroit Pistons hire brother of former Detroit Lions star receiver

Detroit has a new Burleson in town, as the Detroit Pistons have reportedly hired the brother of former Lions WR Nate Burleson.

On Friday night, news broke that the Detroit Pistons had hired Kevin Burleson to be an assistant coach alongside new head coach J.B. Bickerstaff. And before you even ask, yes, he is related.

Kevin Burleson is the brother of former NFL receiver Nate Burleson, who played four years with the Detroit Lions from 2010 to 2013—the most successful stretch of his 11-year NFL career. Nate has since moved onto even bigger things, becoming a co-anchor to the morning news show “CBS Mornings.” But Nate has become an unofficial ambassador of Detroit, often repping gear supporting the city or singing its praises in the media.

So it should come as no surprise that Nate was thrilled for his brother to land in Detroit and get a huge coaching opportunity.

“I am so proud of my big brother!” Nate tweeted on Friday. “He’s one of the best coaches in the game and an even better man. @DetroitPistons just landed one more beautiful basketball ball mind to the team. Aye yo DETROIT #WhatUpDoey’all got another Burleson in the D!”

This is Kevin’s third stint as an assistant coach at the NBA level. He worked with the Memphis Grizzlies for a year in 2018-19 and three seasons with the Minnesota Timberwolves from 2019-22.

Kevin also had a basketball career as a player spanning from Germany, Romania, and even a season with the Charlotte Bobcats.

Here’s a video of Nate hyping up his brother last year as Kevin, who was the head coach of the Rio Grande Valley Vipers (an NBA G League team), all the way to the Finals.
