Cowboys’ possible recruit Corey Davis Although the Cowboys’ roster for the 2024 campaign is essentially set, there are undoubtedly some obvious weak places.

Despite the return of wide receiver CeeDee Lamb following his holdout from training camp, the team’s pass-catcher depth is still weak. The lead is Lamb.Cooks, Brandin, is ranked second.

It is hoped that after being selected by the Cowboys in the third round in 2022, Jalen Tolbert can eventually realize the promise he has occasionally displayed.

The receiving group is completed by Jalen Brooks, newcomer Ryan Flournoy, and special teams stalwart KaVontae Turpin.

This group isn’t all that good after Lamb, who broke franchise records for yards (1,749) and receptions (135) in the previous season.

Since Lamb will likely need a few weeks to settle into the NFL, the lack of depth in this group may become apparent sooner rather than later.

With that in mind, the people at SB Nation’s Blogging the Boys have an intriguing suggestion for the Cowboys to take into consideration:

signing former No. 5 overall pick Corey Davis, a receiver who was previously with the Titans and Jets who is trying to rejoin the league.

Corey Davis was selected fifth overall in 2017.

The six-three Although he was never able to fully develop in the NFL, Davis certainly possess skill. In six seasons, he caught 273 passes for 3,879 yards.

After four years, he left Tennessee to sign a three-year, $37 million contract with the Jets. However, he only participated in two of those seasons before quitting in 2023.

Along with defensive tackle Siaka Ika and cornerback Caleb Farley, BTB writer Brian Martin lists Davis as one of the three free agents the Dallas Cowboys should think about signing.

“Corey Davis has had an inconsistent career since the Tennessee Titans selected him fifth overall in the 2017 NFL Draft.

Despite playing in a run-heavy system for four seasons in Tennessee and two seasons in New York with the Jets, he never reached the 1000-yard receiving mark in his career. Nevertheless, he could be a nice depth player.”

Davis recently returned to action after briefly retiring and missing the entirety of the 2023 season.

At six feet three and 210 pounds, he would be another big target on the outside for Dak Prescott and could potentially help with redzone issues.

Cowboys wide receivers ranked No. 15 by PFF The Cowboys won’t be making any moves of this kind in the near future, but once you pass Lamb and Cooks, they lack experience at the position.

Jalen Cropper, a rookie, and second-year player Kelvin Harmon make up Dallas’ practice squad.

Harmon made 30 catches for the Commanders last season, which made him the most productive career wide receiver on the roster and practice squad outside of Lamb and Cooks. Tolbert has 24 career catches, Turpin has 13, and Brooks has six.

The Cowboys’ receiving group was ranked 15th in the NFL by Pro Football Focus during the offseason, but it was made obvious that Lamb was the main reason for the unit’s high ranking:

Given that CeeDee Lamb is essentially the only player on this list, how highly do the Cowboys deserve to rank? With a 91.4 receiving grade, Lamb was third in the NFL in the previous season.

In addition to having the most first-down catches, he led the league in targets, was tied for third in receiving touchdowns, and ranked second in receiving yards. He could not be stopped.

“Brandin Cooks just had his lowest receiving grade (70.1) since his first season; while Jalen Tolbert might be able to improve, that is just speculation right now.”
