Former Fiji 7s head coach Ben Gollings has called for an urgent restructuring of the Fiji Rugby Union (FRU), highlighting the need for individuals with a deep understanding of sports to lead its operations and administration.

His comments come in the wake of ongoing issues between the FRU and its players, which have cast a shadow over the organisation’s performance and transparency.

Gollings emphasised that FRU needs leaders who understand the nuances of performance, both on and off the field.

“FRU needs people who understand sports, not just from a business perspective, but from the viewpoint of athletes and performance,” Gollings claimed.

The former coach pointed out that Fiji is a nation passionate about rugby, with thousands of fans supporting the sport at every level. However, this enthusiasm must be mirrored in the administrative arm of the FRU.

“There are so many passionate people in Fiji who love rugby, but that same passion and understanding need to exist at the operational level,” Gollings said.

One of the core issues he highlighted is the need for transparency within the union. Gollings suggested that full transparency is crucial for the FRU’s integrity and for restoring trust between the players and the administration.

Additionally, Gollings advocated for the inclusion of a dedicated player representative in the decision-making process at Rugby House.

“The players need a voice at the table. A player representative should be in place to voice the concerns of the athletes directly to the union’s leadership,” he urged, stressing that player welfare and interests must be prioritised in the FRU’s strategies.

Gollings’ comments reflect growing concerns within the rugby community about the FRU’s direction, particularly considering its recent challenges with player relations.

Suva Rugby Union secretary Nemani Tuifagalele supported the call by Gollings for players to form an organisation.

“A player’s union, many things can be achieved,” he said.

Their call for a leadership overhaul and greater transparency echoes the sentiments of many who believe the FRU must reform to ensure Fiji’s continued success on the international rugby stage.

This week, three senior players Waisea Nayacalevu, Levani Botia and Semi Radradra placed the spotlight on FRU Gollings’ comments reflecting growing concerns within the rugby community about the FRU’s direction, particularly considering its recent challenges with player relations.
