During the summer transfer window, Liverpool showed interest in Spain international Martin Zubimendi. He is currently being linked to a move to Manchester City.

Star player Martin Zubimendi of Real Sociedad has discussed his future in light of reports that he could join Manchester City. The summer transfer to Liverpool for the Spanish international seemed certain after his outstanding results at Euro 2024. Liverpool was certain that the midfield player wanted to move to Anfield, therefore they were prepared to activate his £51 million release clause in August.

But following a last-minute plea from his childhood club, the agreement fell through, and Zubimendi decided to stay with Sociedad. Even though Ryan Gravenberch is playing well in a defensive midfield role for Liverpool, who are presently leading the Premier League, Zubimendi recently said he doesn’t regret staying at Sociedad, who have won just two of their nine games this season.

According to Spanish reports, the Premier League may show greater interest in Zubimendi in January. City is apparently mulling a move for the midfield player in response to Rodri’s ACL injury that ended his season during a match against Arsenal last month. However, Zubimendi reaffirmed his happiness to remain in San Sebastian when questioned about City’s purported interest in holding a news conference prior to Spain’s forthcoming UEFA Nations League matches against Denmark and Serbia.

“There are always rumours but until now I’ve always thought that the best solution for me is staying at Real Sociedad,” he said. “I’ve still a lot of things to give to this club, I still want to grow and develop here.” City will need to accomplish what Liverpool was unable to accomplish in order to sign Zubimendi: convince the Spanish international to quit the team he has been with since he was 12 years old. The midfield player hasn’t signed a new deal with Sociedad yet, so a buy-out clause in his current deal is still in effect until June 2027, which may aid their pursuit of him.
