Though it is unfair and harsh to speculate about a head coach or player’s job security, Mike McCarthy’s future has become one of the NFL’s most talked-about stories following the Dallas Cowboys’ 47-9 humiliation at the hands of the Detroit Lions on Sunday in front of their home crowd. The Cowboys were thrashed at home by 38 points for the third time this season and the fourth time in the previous five games. In Week 3, Dallas fell behind the Ravens by as much as 22 points in the third quarter, despite a late rally.

Normally, a person would lose their job after just one humiliating home loss. It is hardly encouraging for the seasoned head coach McCarthy that it has become ingrained in his style. In spite of this, Jerry Jones declared following the game that he is not currently thinking about changing coaches. Although McCarthy’s firing might not be possible until after the season, Cowboys supporters and the media are already considering potential successors.

Bill Belichick, the former head coach of the Patriots, will probably be at the top of many lists, and rumours about him began within two hours after Sunday’s defeat.

Bill Belichick to Cowboys rumours intensify following Dallas’s defeat by the Lions. If the Cowboys decide to make a coaching change after the season, Belichick is generally considered the front-runner to take over as head coach in the NFL, according to FOX Sports’ Jordan Schultz. Several people that Schultz spoke with confirm that Belichick and the Jones family have a “great relationship”.

Although not “new” information, this is nonetheless noteworthy. After the Cowboys’ crushing playoff defeat to the Packers in the summer, Belichick was viewed as a top contender for the position. McCarthy’s dismissal seemed inevitable, but Jones took the bold choice to bring the HC back for the last year of his deal.

Jones is lucky that Belichick did not get hired during the coaching carousel in 2024. The Atlanta Falcons extended a second interview offer to the six-time Super Bowl champion, but they ultimately decided to go with Raheem Morris, the defensive coordinator of the Los Angeles Rams, at the time.

For many Cowboys supporters, Belichick is not their first pick to replace McCarthy, even though Jones may feel that way. Two well-known head coach possibilities who would probably be a better choice than Belichick are Texans offensive coordinator Bob Slowik and Lions offensive coordinator Ben Johnson, who coached circles around Mike Zimmer on Sunday. It all depends on your preference. But one thing that is certain is that with every Cowboys loss, Belichick rumours will only get hotter. Dallas has already lost a number of games due to their lack of competitiveness, so it’s hard to predict how many more they will drop.
