The star is fit for the next match – Klopp offers Liverpool injury update against Newcastle
Liverpool face Newcastle United on New Year’s Day and Diogo Jota is back in the matchday squad. Jurgen Klopp has confirmed Diogo Jota will return to Liverpool training less than a day after a full injury lay-off. The Portuguese were back at the Red Sand#039; team after he was sidelined for a month with a hamstring injury during the Boxing Day trip to Burnley. It looked like a routine win for the Turf Moor visitors when Darwin Nunez broke the deadlock on six minutes. But Liverpool wasted a number of first-half chances against relegation-threatened Burnley and pressed on after the break. But Jota was introduced from the bench and put a stop to the game when he slotted home in the 90th minute – as Liverpool went top of the Premier League. Klopp admitted that the Red Sand#039; the medical staff wanted additional training for the attacker before starting the operation. But when Newcastle United visit Anfield on New Year’s Day, Jota will be training more – meaning he will be fitter and sharper. Liverpool manager Klopp said: andquot; You never know exactly what to expect in the fourth game in 10 days, it was really intense. Whatever the outside world thinks, it’s really cool – and to come here and play the game that we play is just extraordinary. It’s also extraordinary that we didn’t score more goals…actually we did, but they took them away for various reasons. So we had to wait a long time and obviously for a long time we caused Burnley so many problems that we had a super game. As it’s the last game in a very busy season, you can’t expect it, but we managed it. andquot;I really liked the game we played, but we should have scored more goals, that’s for sure. Then the game is wide open and Burnley have a huge chance to score at the second point – maybe even the first if I’m right: at goal if he misses the ball. I’m pretty sure it was the first chance [for them] but in the end we deserved to win the game and it was two perfect goalscorers, I would say Darwin and then Diogo. We pulled him into the squad because he only trained twice and the medical department wanted to give him extra training and I said he could get it at Burnley. He had it tonight and now he will be able to train properly tomorrow and then he will be ready for Newcastle, which will be really helpful. Two zeroes, no injuries, all good.
