The international break is usually a frustrating time for Liverpool fans and this week is no exception.
Just when the Reds were on the brink of promotion, going unbeaten in their first four games of the new season, supporters have another week to wait to see them back in action. Given the relationship many Liverpool fans have with the Three Lions, England’s two games in between are of little consolation.
Entertainment, however, can be found elsewhere. Cody Gakpo, for example, scored in Holland’s 3-0 win over Greece, while Dominik Szoboszlai dominated Hungary’s 2-1 win over Serbia. The midfielder has been the darling of the new crop so far this season, but his midfield may have simply surpassed him in the eyes of the fans. And it only took one picture.
Alexis Mac Allister played for Argentina against Ecuador in a 2026 World Cup qualifier where the world champions won 1-0. The game pitted the 24-year-old against old Brighton teammate Moisés Caicedo. Of course, if things had gone differently, the two could have been reunited at Anfield, but Caicedo decided to turn down Liverpool’s record-breaking bid to force a move to Chelsea.
Since then, Blues fans have been reminding Liverpool fans of this fact. But on Thursday night, Mac Allister helped them restore some credit.

Liverpool fans naturally enjoyed the moment and you suspect some of the people behind the scenes at Anfield probably had a smile on their faces too. The picture pretty much sums up Liverpool and Chelsea’s progress so far. The Reds’ calm and methodical approach to the transfer window has seen them make real progress this season, while the Blues’ panicked spread has done little to improve them and has already deserted them.
Caicedo certainly didn’t have the kind of start many would expect given its hefty price tag. Since his move to Stamford Bridge, the 21-year-old has found himself the target of collections of social media posts pointing out a number of mistakes. His cause was not helped by mistakes against West Ham and Nottingham Forest which directly led to the goals that caused Chelsea’s defeats. Meanwhile, Mac Allister, bought for the much more reasonable sum of $44m (£35m/€41m), quietly went about his business. He may not have made the breakthrough yet, but Liverpool fans can be more than happy with what they’ve seen so far.
While Chelsea supporters may have enjoyed Liverpool’s win not only for Caicedo but also Roméo Lavia, the evidence so far suggests that the Reds continue to dominate their rivals both on and off the pitch. Chelsea may have won the battles but Liverpool are winning the war.
