Marcelo Bielsa gives an update on Liverpool star Darwin Nunez’s injury
Darwin Nunez is struggling with “muscular problems”, according to Marcelo Bielsa.
Uruguay coach Marcelo Bielsa has announced the injury to Liverpool star Darwin Nunez, saying the striker has “muscular problems”.
Nunez started Uruguay’s World Cup qualifier against Ecuador on Tuesday, but many were surprised when Bielsa decided to replace the player at half-time. The 24-year-old played in Uruguay’s previous match and provided two assists in a 3-1 win over Chile.
“Darwin arrived with a muscle problem and it limited his performance,” former Leeds United boss Bielsa said. Metro’s most popular stories
“I thought it was necessary to replace him because he worked too much trying to press and attack in the last game.”
Nunez has been in fine form for Liverpool this season and produced a heroic performance at Newcastle last month where he came off the bench to score twice in the last 10 minutes to secure victory with just 10 men. He followed that up with an assist in Liverpool’s last game as Jurgen Klopp’s side beat Aston Villa 3-0. The Reds return to action on Saturday when they travel to face Wolves – and it remains to be seen if Nunez will be fully fit for that match. Nunez was signed by Liverpool for £85m last summer and scored 17 goals and provided five assists in his first 46 games for the Merseyside club. Klopp praised Nunez for his recent performance against Newcastle, revealing the forward was “not happy” starting the match from the bench, leaving him “fiery” when he came on.
