Mykhailo Mudryk hopes to start Mauricio Pochettino’s Chelsea team in the Premier League clash with Bournemouth. The 22-year-old has had a difficult start to the new season without a single league start coming in, playing just 67 minutes from the bench. He missed the win against Luton and the Carabao Cup win against AFC Wimbledon through injury, but has since returned to training. He also played in the Ukrainian team’s European Championship qualifier against England. Against Kyle Walker, Mudryk struggled to make a lasting impression, but supporters called for either him, Noni Madueke or Cole Palmer to start. Instead of that trio, Ben Chilwell has been introduced in an advanced role and Pochettino has opted for just two established forwards in his last two starts.
A possible tactical reassessment does not seem likely at the moment, as Pochettino defended the use of Chilwell in a press conference on Friday. “I know Ben is a full-back, but he can help the team in different positions,” he said. I think Ben Chilwell has created more chances in team animation than any other player. I think Ben played a similar position in the national team.
However, Mudryk seems to be showing Pochettino his best qualities in training with his electric pace and quick feet. The January arrival took to Instagram to post a clip of his goal in a small game where he spins past a defender and receives the ball back from a teammate before finishing firmly. While on the pitch at Cobham, Mudryk produced some performances similar to his electrifying debut against Liverpool earlier this year. Trust and belief are paramount for Mudryk and if he is to enjoy success at Stamford Bridge, it will likely come down to Pochettino.
“It’s not all about what happens in the match,” he told Chelsea’s official website earlier this summer. “It is more an effect of your mentality. If you feel confident and you feel that the coach trusts you, you will definitely play another game. “From the opening days of the first season, I began to understand what the coach wants from us . and from me. It makes it easier to enjoy the game with your teammates.”
