Dermot Gallagher gives his verdict on the VAR recording and the next action that will follow.

The VAR vote on Luis Diaz’s wrong goal for Liverpool against Tottenham has been released.

Former Premier League referee Dermot Gallagher believes VAR could have asked a simple question to avoid a mistake that prevented Liverpool from scoring. Diaz was flagged for offside after scoring, but replays showed he was indeed offside. But VAR’s Darren England mistakenly believed the goal was a throw-in decision, so he told referee Simon Hooper the review was over. Liverpool said “sporting integrity was undermined” after the incident in Saturday’s Premier League match, which Spurs won 2-1. The ECHO also understands that PGMOL boss Howard Webb has also apologized to the Anfield club. Manchester City’s Spanish manager Pep Guardiola attends a press conference at Manchester City’s training ground ahead of their UEFA Champions League Group G football match against Red Star Belgrade.
Reacting to Sky Sports News’ release of the footage, Gallagher believes the fall was caused by a failure to question what the on-field decision was. He said: “It was a terrible mistake. Everyone admitted it.
“It’s about the process now and one of the processes they have to go through from now on is that the VAR has to ask the referee, ‘What is the decision on the pitch?’
“If that little question was asked and [Simon Hooper] said ‘out’, you have a starting point. Then you can move on.” “Unfortunately, because that question wasn’t asked, they were under the impression that the goal was awarded on the field and that’s how it went.”
