Liverpool could force Premier League to stage REPLAY, claims lawyer

Liverpool could face a repeat of their controversial Premier League defeat to Tottenham on Saturday, a top sports lawyer said after the Reds’ 2-1 defeat. After VAR officials Darren England and Dan Cook mistakenly disallowed Luis Diaz’s own goal during the Premier League game, PGMOL admitted that “significant human error” had caused the error and later released the audio of their discussion to the public.
After PGMOL’s first post-match statement, Liverpool claimed the decision was “invalid” and promised to “explore options” to seek justice for the offence. The first step was to listen to VAR’s conversation with the referee. Simon Hooper.
Sports lawyer Stephen Taylor Heath, associate director of law firm JMW Solicitors, told Mail Sport that the Premier League board has the power to order a replay of a league game if recommended by an appointed committee.
According to Rule W1 of the Premier League Rules, the governing body can “ask for further information about possible breaches of the rules”, including those committed by an official. PGMOL admitted that “significant human error” led to Luis Diaz’s goal being disallowed and later released audio of VAR’s discussion with the on-field referee.
As explained by PGMOL and highlighted in published audio, video assistant England and his assistant Cook initially thought the on-field decision was a Liverpool goal – and so did not overturn the offside when replays clearly showed Diaz. .
The VAR operator can be heard saying after the false start: “Wait, wait, wait, wait, the decision about the pitch was ‘on the pitch’, are you happy with that? About 30 seconds later, when Liverpool received a throw-in. -in, the panicked VAR team decided not to call a foul and continued the game saying: “They restarted the game. Can’t do anything. Can’t do anything. ” Speaking to Mail Sport, Heath said: “If PGMOL’s view is that the initial mistake was that they thought the goal was awarded, then that is quite worrying because the graphic shows what they were asked to check.

“It is possible that Liverpool will put pressure on the Premier League board to convene a committee that would have the opportunity to do a replay, among other possible outcomes.
– It could be argued that if the referee had known the mistake straight away and informed the players and staff, the Tottenham manager could definitely have won against Liverpool.
“It was done earlier when Marcelo Bielsa ordered Leeds United to concede a goal against Aston Villa after his team found their opponent was injured.”
However, Heath also noted that it could be difficult for Liverpool to identify a foul that costs the Anfield club points legitimately, as there are a number of other factors that could determine the outcome of a game.
