The Premier League committee found another “flawed” decision in Liverpool’s game with Tottenham
Diogo Jota should not have been sent off during Liverpool’s controversial 2-1 defeat to Tottenham Hotspur on Saturday, according to the Premier League’s independent Key Match Incident Panel.
Jota received two yellow cards in quick succession for incidents involving Destiny Udog, and the Liverpool striker received his first booking after appearing to fail to connect with the Spurs defender. After his first booking, Jota was cautioned again for a tackle on Udogie less than 120 seconds later and referee Simon Hooper quickly waved a second yellow card at the Portugal international.
But according to a new report from ESPN, five members of the Premier League’s independent Key Match Incidents Panel voted 3-2 that Jota should not have been shown a second yellow card. The report says the decision is “flawed” and believes the 69th-minute throw “did not meet the threshold for a yellow card”. The PGMOL is yet to make a decision on Darren England’s Liverpool despite the VAR error
The ECHO understands that no decision has yet been made on whether Darren England will feature in Liverpool’s second game of the season.
On Wednesday, The Telegraph reported that the official had received the backing of Professional Game Match Officials Limited (PGMOL) director Howard Webb and would not act or be responsible for VAR in Liverpool-related matches for the rest of the season. The 37-year-old was at the center of controversy for the Reds after Luis Diaz’s goal was wrongly ruled out in Saturday’s Premier League defeat at Tottenham Hotspur.
England were at the center of VAR with VAR assistant Dan Cook ruling out a legitimate goal that would have put Liverpool ahead with ten men minutes after Curtis Jones was sent off. The ECHO understands that no decision has yet been made on the Englishman’s future appointments at the Reds with six months to go in the Premier League season.
