Jurgen Klopp reveals why Wataru Endo was sent off at half-time in Liverpool’s defeat
Jurgen Klopp has revealed that his double half-time substitution at Liverpool and the defeat to Royal Union Saint-Gilloise was always on the cards. The Belgians defeated the Reds 2:1, having already moved to the finals of the European League before the game. Klopp fielded a youthful side that struggled to find rhythm, although the result meant little. Jarell Quansah scored his first goal for the club in the first period. Liverpool are at the top of the Premier League, with matches against Manchester United and Arsenal ahead. As a result, Ibrahima Konate and Wataru Endo withdrew at half-time against the Union and were replaced by Joe Gomez and Ryan Gravenberch. In his post-match press conference, when asked what he was thinking when he started Konate, Reds manager Klopp said: “We just wanted to share the intensity. Would I want to play Joe Gomez 90 or Ibou 90 if we had the chance to do it? [I decided] 45 and 45, the same in midfield. These changes were planned before the game regardless of the result. We were just trying to experiment. It was clear that Jarell would continue to play if he could continue to play. That was the thinking behind it.
