Penn State Football: Central for National Signing Day
Penn State supporters, rejoice—the early signing period is here. James Franklin and his staff will begin getting signed letters of intent via email this morning at 7 a.m. eastern time from the almost two dozen players who have committed to play for the Nittany Lions.
Although Penn State didn’t place in the Top 10 nationally this year as they did last, the Nittany Lions will still sign a class that ranks in the Top 15. As of right now, PSU is ranked No. 13 overall in the On3 Consensus Team Rankings.
For those who do not know, the On3 Consensus Team Rankings are the only ranking that assigns equal weight to each of the four services: On3, Rivals, 247, and ESPN. By aggregating the top-rated commitments for every team and calculating the total based on a rolling average of the current total commitments among Power 5 schools, it also addresses the issue of changing class sizes during the recruiting cycle. As of right now, that figure is 19.
When classes at State College start up again next month, around half of this year’s class is also anticipated to enroll early. On the offensive side, that includes all three offensive linemen (Alex Birchmeier, J’ven Williams, and Anthony Donkoh), tight end Joey Schlaffer, quarterback Jaxon Smolik, and athlete Mathias Barnwell. Five defensive players were among the early enrollees: defensive backs Lamont Payne, Elliot Washington, Zion Tracy, and linebackers Tony Rojas and Ta’Mere Robinson.

For a considerable amount of time, Robinson was regarded as one of Penn State’s top targets for the 2023 recruiting class. He is a Pittsburgh native who has been considered one of the state’s top prospects since he was a freshmen. At the end of his tenure at Brashear High, he was ranked as Pennsylvania’s No. 5 player by On3.
After visiting campus once as a freshman and having to postpone any visits until the summer of 2021 due to the pandemic, Robinson received an offer from the Nittany Lions after his sophomore season. Robinson made four trips to State College in a span of four months, leading many to believe that the Lions were the team to beat.
