A prospective Celtics target signs with a rival conference
There are getting fewer opportunities for the Celtics to fill their final roster spot.
After the trade deadline, Brad Stevens expressed his thoughts on how the Boston Celtics might add players to their roster. “I think we just have to see number one is if there is somebody that can again provide great depth for our group, but I don’t anticipate a person that vaults into our every night rotation,” Stevens said.
Regarding the potential to move Neemias Queta from a two-way contract to a full-time one, the team’s president of basketball operations stated to Inside The Celtics, “I have, we have, to continue to evaluate everything for that last roster spot (that) we have, but he’s done a great job.”
Before Boston crushed the Golden State Warriors 140-88, the 24-year-old Portuguese player was battling with a hyperextended right knee, according to Joe Mazzulla, who predicted he would be out for a week or two.
The seven-foot center constantly makes the most of his playing time. Nevertheless, his injury deflates but does not completely eliminate the prospect that the Celtics will address his contract in-season for a player who has played 432 minutes in his career and could miss the first half of March, with no assurance he will participate in a game with the parent club when available.
In addition, they may decide that it is preferable to wait until this summer to resolve the situations involving Al Horford, Xavier Tillman, and Luke Kornet before deciding whether to sign Queta to a normal contract or try to work out a two-way arrangement.
Players on the squad have been pushing for Blake Griffin to return as the C’s consider whether to fill their available roster position and how best to do it.
But the possibilities are narrowing for NBA players who are currently active. It’s not as if Boston or the other guys were really interested in collaborating, but Mike Muscala signed with the Oklahoma City Thunder, Shake Milton selected the New York Knicks, and Danilo Gallinari joined the Milwaukee Bucks.
Patty Mills of ESPN claims that Patty Mills is yet another possible target to cross off the list. The 15-year veteran is joining the Miami Heat. He was a key member of the San Antonio Spurs’ 2014 NBA championship team.
