‘Game-Breaking’ Veteran WR to Be Signed by Lions, Per Request

The Detroit Lions might use some assistance adding to their wide receiver group, and according to one rumor, they should make a strong run at former American Olympian and NFL journeyman Marquise Goodwin, a seasoned veteran.

The Lions might require a little more assistance in their receiving corps, according to Bleacher Report’s breakdown of the 32 teams’ remaining requirements.

According to the article, Goodwin would make sense as a fresh addition, having just finished his season with the Cleveland Browns.

Josh Reynolds’ departure this summer cost the Lions a proven target, according to the source, but they still have Jameson Williams, a 2022 first-round choice, as a “project.”

Williams has had moments of excellent play, but he missed most of his rookie season recovering from an injury, and he missed the first four games of the 2023 campaign due to a gambling penalty. Entering his third season, his place in the offense is still up in the air. The article pointed out that the Lions might still use more options behind top receiver Amon-Ra St. Brown, even if they did deal for WR Donovan Peoples-Jones last season.

The study did state, “Yet, some receiver insurance wouldn’t hurt.” Despite playing little for Cleveland in the previous campaign, Marquise Goodwin still has the ability to change the course of a game.

As a fourth or fifth situational target, he would be useful. After competing in the long jump at the 2012 Summer Olympics, 33-year-old Goodwin was selected by the Buffalo Bills in the 2013 NFL Draft. Over ten NFL seasons, he made 19 catches for 3,090 yards and 18 touchdowns, but he also had injury issues and periods of poor play.

According to Mike Garofolo of the NFL Network, who reported on X, the Lions have already added further depth to the wide receiver room with the addition of a player who impressed at rookie minicamp.

With the signing of St. Brown to a huge contract extension this offseason, the Lions have established their position at the top of the receiving depth chart, even though they may still need further help at the bottom.

According to Ian Rapoport of the NFL Network, the two parties reached an agreement on a four-year contract for more than $120 million in fresh funding, including $77 million in total guarantees. Prior to the NFL Draft last month, St. Brown made a statement stating that he had traveled to Detroit and witnessed the team’s ascent from the conference’s bottom to become a Super Bowl contender.

St. Brown was a key player in both that ascent and the team’s march to the NFC Championship game the previous season.

According to the team’s official website, “The entire journey that I’ve had is surprising, even just being here with the guys that came in.”
