Veteran Safety Signed by Jaguars to Become a Secondary

Ian Rappoport reports that the Jacksonville Jaguars have signed seventh-year safety Terrell Edmunds, bolstering their secondary.

Edmunds, a former first-round selection in 2018 by the Pittsburgh Steelers, played for the team for six seasons before dividing his time in 2023 between the Eagles and Titans. Just before OTAs, the Jags made their move following their unsigned status during the March free agency period.

The Jaguars added LB Ty Summers and Tre Flowers to their secondary in addition to signing Edmunds. Jacksonville made a wise depth signing in Edmunds, who has demonstrated his ability to remain healthy and play important roles. Edmunds was moved to the Eagles right before the deadline after playing nine games with the Titans in the previous campaign.

In contrast, Flowers participated in every one of the Atlanta Falcons’ 17 games in 2023. Before being traded to Cincinnati, where he spent one and a half seasons, he had previously played for Seattle for three and a half seasons.

The 2023 season for the Jaguars concluded in a depressing manner. After taking first place in the division in 2022, the team was hoping to win the AFC South again. Rather, they dropped five of their final six games, falling short of the Houston Texans for the division title and missing out on a wild card berth.

The Jaguars hope to make a comeback in 2024, and a major factor in that will be Trevor Lawrence’s development following a decline in 2023.

But their defense will also be crucial, and it will be interesting to watch how Edmunds can strengthen their secondary. In 2023, the seventh-year player racked up 2.5 sacks, 48 tackles, and one interception.

The Jaguars’ defense will be hoping to strengthen overall in 2024, even though they placed tenth in the league and were strong against the pass in 2023.

With an average of 342.8 yards allowed per game in 2023, they were rated 19th in terms of yards allowed. They are 16th in the NFL in terms of points allowed per game, with 21.8. GIVEMESPORT Key Stat:

After starting the 2023 season with an 8-3 record and holding the AFC South lead into December, the Jaguars lost five of their final six games, including their season-ending 28-20 loss to the Titans.

With their new depth additions, the Jags will be hoping that their offseason actions will be sufficient to win the AFC South once more.
