Breaking News: A former Husker Football Player Is Arrested for Attempting to Kill ex-wife with a Gun

Man in Northeast Nebraska accused of shooting at ex-wife, charged with attempted murder

WEST POINT, Neb. (KTIV) – A man in the Northeast Nebraska community of West Point is facing several charges, including attempted murder after he allegedly shot at his ex-wife.

Court documents show 41-year-old Antonio Ciapara is facing eight total charges after police were called to a West Point home on Sunday, May 12. His charges include:

  • Attempted murder
  • Three counts of use of a deadly weapon to commit a felony
  • Second-degree attempted assault
  • Terroristic threats
  • Child abuse
  • Third-degree domestic assault

According to court documents, it started at around 11:30 p.m. on Sunday after an officer was dispatched to a drunk pedestrian call at 852 S Kindschuh Street, located in southern West Point.

In court documents, West Point Police Officer Miguel Peña says as he got closer to the house he was informed that the person in the report could possibly be armed with a handgun.

Peña says when he got to the location he approached a woman behind the house. After talking to the woman, Peña says he learned Ciapara was in the house and that he reportedly punched the woman on the head, threatened to end her life and was drunk. Authorities say this woman was Ciapara’s ex-wife.

According to Peña, the woman believed that Ciapara could hurt her because he had previous military experience and had access to firearms.

Peña says he was at the scene with Assistant Police Chief Brett Vance and the two of them drew their firearms and approached the front door of the home. Vance began calling out to Ciapara to come out, during which Peña says there were three children in the house looking out towards them. The three children were six, three and two years old.

Vance then told Peña that he saw Ciapara peeking out of a room and that he had something in his hand. Peña says he then heard a gunshot coming from the back of the house that was followed by a scream.

When the two got to the back of the house they reportedly saw Ciapara closing the back door. After circling back to the front of the house, Peña says Ciapara left the building and approached them. Ciapara was then placed under arrest.

Peña later learned that while the woman was in the backyard, Ciapara reportedly aimed a rifle at her and she ran for cover before it was fired.

Ciapara was later charged and initially, his bond was set at $500,000 but was lowered to $200,000. As of Thursday, May 16, Ciapara has posted bond after paying 10 percent of it in cash.
