According to numerous media reports on Monday, veteran tight end Logan Thomas and the San Francisco 49ers have reached an agreement on a one-year contract.

The 32-year-old Thomas spent the last four seasons as a player with the Washington Commanders, where he started 15 of 16 games and hauled in 55 receptions for 496 yards and four touchdowns in the last campaign.

2020 was his greatest season, starting 15 of 16 games and setting career highs with 72 receptions for 670 yards and six touchdowns.

After being taken by the Arizona Cardinals in the fourth round of the 2014 NFL Draft out of Virginia Tech, Thomas is a converted quarterback.

He was a tight end with the Detroit Lions in 2019 and the Buffalo Bills in 2017–18.

Additionally, Thomas played tight end on the Miami Dolphins (2015–16), New York Giants (2016), and Lions (2016) practice squads. When he wasn’t injured, he became a starter with Washington. On March 1, the Commanders let him go in an effort to save money.

San Francisco has been searching for a backup for five-time Pro Bowl selection and two-time All-Pro George Kittle, who was lost to the Atlanta Falcons in free agency along with Ross Dwelley and Charlie Woerner.

The Lions matched the 49ers’ restricted free agency offer sheet when they signed Detroit tight end Brock Wright in March.

The team selected Cameron Latu and Brayden Willis as tight ends in the 2023 draft, but Latu (knee) missed the entire season due to injury while Willis failed to record a reception in seven games.
